Preserving the extraordinary stories of the survivors, and the lessons, of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal for generations
Remember Bhopal Foundation aims to keep the memory of Bhopal alive, and to help them retain control over their own histories and memories by preventing its takeover by institutional historians associated with the state, academia or the corporate sector. And to connect these memories and struggles with environmental disasters across the world. Survivors have been portrayed as victims deserving the world’s pity, and deprived of agency in articulating their histories and shaping their future.
This is an effort to foster respect and understanding for survivors of the world’s worst industrial disaster and for one of the longest standing struggles against corporate crime
Our Objectives
A People’s Museum
RBF will establish, sustain and administer a people’s memorial on the Union Carbide Disaster in Bhopal and its impact on life, environment and society. We will continuously collect and record the stories of the survivors and their current generations, as well as those battling with the serious consequences of the contaminated underground water.
Educate and Empower
Through awareness building and information dissemination, RBF will educate and empower people in the consequences of such a disaster and how similar disasters can be prevented in the future. RBF will record the struggles of the survivors and their supporters for justice.
People’s Action
RBF will stimulate people’s involvement and action wherever there is a similarly affected community or struggles for life, dignity, sustainability and justice. To do this, we will participate in, and organise, events where people can come together to discuss, debate and inform each other.
History of the People’s Museum
Survivors of the disaster started Yaad-e-hadsa, an informal memorial, in the early 1990s. Later in 2009 a trust was formed and a museum was formally inaugurated in 2014. The musuem had to be shutdown in 2022 because of the consequences of the pandemic. RBF has inherited this important legacy and aims to have a permanent space for the survivors.
Support our mission
RBF has in its safe custody all the artifacts, objects, posters, photographs and equipment from the Remember Bhopal Museum. We are aiming to set up the museum as it was, with important additions that capture the past decade of medical and legal issues, and the work done by survivor organisations and their supporters. Our goal is to launch a significant part of the museum for the upcoming 42nd anniversary of the Union Carbide Disaster. To do this, we are raising funds for expenses like space rental, renovation, exhibit fabrication, printing and utility bills.

RBF considers financial transparency and accountability to be of utmost importance. All donors will be receive regular email updates and a detailed annual report that lists all our activities and work and how your funds have been utilised. We invite you to visit the museum in old Bhopal as soon as it is ready.
